I started my tumblr late 2011 and in fact at that time I could not even dream about the experiences or people it would bring along. One of the "earliest memories" in terms of my tumblr relates to Pitti Uomo 82 which was the first fair in Florence I ever took part. I remember that a bit before the trip I got a message via tumblr from a guy who at that time used to keep a blog called aneapolitandream, a well-known blog for every guy following menswear. The blog was kept by Agyesh Madan, also earlier the director of product development of Isaia.
Friendship started at Pitti Uomo
The message itself was an invitation for a lunch hold at the Isaia stand during the fair. Not that big of a deal when you put it like this but for a guy who did not know almost anyone in the industry and who was just writing his own blog in Finland it was kind of nice to "get noticed" by one of the most inspiring men in this field. By a guy whose pictures had been used as a source for inspiration multiple times. Since June 2012 a lot has happened and nowadays I'm happy to know this man - who also is one of the most humble, sincere and genuine guys I've got the honor to be dealing with. And to be able to call him a friend. Although some things hasn't change - still this guy is one of the most inspiring people in the field. He is a guy you can learn a lot from by taking a look at the person, proportions and fit. And especially you should take a look at how he combines textures, materials and colors. His thoughts of style really comes real in him. As he puts it himself "style is just better left undefined, it's this intersection of comfort, ease in one's way of life and pure enjoyment. It shines through, irrespective of what one is wearing." And definitely - it shines through. Recently Agyesh was kind enough to take his time and answer few questions I had in mind. I am a product developer. I believe true creation starts with understanding how and where product is made. I am currently on that quest.
Tell a bit more about your work you did at ISAIA?
Being at ISAIA was an experience of a lifetime for me. Working with a firm deeply rooted in tradition and alongside one of the best in this industry, Leonardo Genova, was an absolute honor. In terms of my work, two main projects certainly do come to mind.
- The Making of - The opportunity to create something timeless that captures the work that goes behind the product and to bring it to the world was priceless. We garnered some great appreciation for it around the world and had an absolute blast creating it. I am honored that I was given the responsibility to lead that project to fruition
- Secondly, the ability to organize and develop the sportswear arm for a such historied brand was the best project I could ask for. We spent a lot of time thinking about how to do this right and create a sustainable system that would last for a long time. We had to do something that harmoniously complemented the well-defined aesthetic of the tailored clothing while being able to stand on its own. And with amazing support from the whole team, I strongly believe that we were able to get the formula right and that ISAIA sportswear is well on its way to solidifying its identity in the market.
What are the "corner stones" of your style?
I have never thought of it in such finite terms. Style is just better left undefined, it's this intersection of comfort, ease in one's way of life and pure enjoyment. It shines through, irrespective of what one is wearing. Also, it is not a beginning or an end, just a state of continuous evolvement with who you are, where you are and what you are doing.
What is your earliest memory related to menswear and style?
Earliest memories have to be my those of my father. No doubt. The uniformed military officer in the morning, the athlete in the evening, the perfect blend of traditional and western clothing and those eyes full of true enjoyment. He cared just enough about how he dressed until he stepped out of his room and then enjoyed every moment from there on. He epitomizes a certain idea of "cool" that still resonates with me.
What inspires you / How do you find inspiration?
I believe that I am more calculated than spontaneous when it comes to this. I love to design within boundaries and working backward from production. So, I search for ideas in new production techniques, fabric weaving and dyeing. The idea of creating a thoughtfully designed product that the customer finds great value in, something he/she enjoys on every use is what really drives me.
Finally, Your advice for men who want to be well dressed?
No advice, just that it is ok to care a little. Paying attention to proportions and the context in which the clothes are worn is important. Also, be open to asking questions and learning about the product from the experts who have made it their life's work to create them. And lastly, it's clothes, have fun, make some mistakes and enjoy them.
