The Attack pocket square
A piece of Finnish history, culture and attitude into your pocket. This pocket square is easy to fold in different ways and will keep its shape in your pocket through the day. The vivid and beautiful colors combine perfectly with the soft wool-silk fabric and finally the white and blue framing and edges gives the square a perfect Finnishing touch.
The story
In 1899 the February Manifesto enacted Russian law in Finland. The aim was to assimilate Finland into Russian culture and politics, essentially trying to break its autonomy. The people in Finland did not like that and large numbers of Finns vowed resistance.
The artist, Edvard Isto painted The Attack in this climate, in 1899. In the picture Russia is personified by the two-headed eagle that attacks a law book in the arms of the fair maiden, who is the personification of Finland. The painting was famous at the time for it came to represent the resistance of the Finnish people. The message of the painting is (unfortunately) more than accurate again today.
The original painting can be found in the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki.
