Dark brown shantung tie with hand rolled edges

A shantung silk tie is an option for men whose knowledge of style is above average. Due to its rough surface, shantung silk ties are particularly suited to more relaxed yet still dressed-up styles.

The Story

Shantung silk is named after the part of China from where it originates, a province located on the east coast of the North China plain. DLA shantung silk ties are made by hand and feature a slightly rough, woven fabric with uneven silk yarns. The result is a soft and variably textured, slightly crispy tie. This fabric makes every DLA shantung silk tie unique, and the rough surface makes it particularly suited to relaxed yet elevated styles.

How to wear a shantung silk tie

The texture of shantung silk is a nice way to bring a little contrast to otherwise basic and simple outfits. It works well with constructed or softly tailored jackets. As the material itself is quite phenomenal and likely to attract attention, my advice is to opt for simple and plain combinations.

Pair it with heavier tweed or flannel fabrics during the colder months, and with linen or smooth and lightweight wools during spring and summer. Shantung is also recommended whenever you are looking to personalize your party attire.

Best summer casual outfits with a brown shantung tie:

  • Brown or olive green unstructured cotton suit
  • Light blue soft collar shirt
  • White linen pocket square with blue contrast borders
  • Brown suede tassel loafers

Material - shantung silk:

The most notable feature of shantung silk ties is its durable, textured feel. This is a result of the dupioni silk spinning process, but the double strands of the yarns are not separated. Traditionally Shantung silk has been woven manually from uneven yarns, which results in a soft and variably textured silk.

DLA shantung silk ties are soft but slightly crisp. They feature rich texture, and the many little knots or slubs on the surface of the cloth give it a charming, uneven look.

  • Our ties are crafted in Northern Italy by family business that has been making high quality neckwear for decades. All aspects of production are done inside the family-run factory, from cutting fabrics to tip making, stitching and finishing the ties.
  • DLA essential ties are made by using the classic, light and minimalistic three-fold construction and feature light interlining that helps the tie keep its shape, drape on the wearer, and shake out wrinkles after wear. The essential line is for them for who a good drape, beautiful knot and functionality are more important than the number of folds.
  • DLA ties are subtle yet refined. There are no striking brand tags or visible logos. We want you to love wearing them purely for the quality and feel they feature.
