The story
The picture illustrates Kullervo, a warrior heading to the war to take revenge on his uncle Untamo. The wintry landscape beautifully showcases the Finnish nature and northern lights behind Kullervo and his horse. This pocket square featuring the Finnish winter and the blue and white colors is our tribute for Finland and the 100th year of our independence.
The Kullervo rides to war is a painting completed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela in 1901. The painting is inspired not only by Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century but also by the Kullervo mythology. The original mural painting hangs on the wall of the Old Student House in Helsinki.
