Meet up with Passaggio Cravatte

In January during Pitti Uomo I had a pleasure to meet with Gianni Cerutti , a young man from Robbio, Italy. Gianni is a guy with a truly passion for ties and he is also the man behind the bespoke tie company “Passaggio Cravatte”.

Gianni says he finds his inspiration from the past and old archives and describes his own style to be much of a dandy-like; elegant and classic but with a touch of “funny and perceptible” elements included. It’s noteworthy that when we met with Gianni and his partner Marta, Gianni was wearing matching tie and pocket square. Something many would consider being a “serious” misstep that should never be done. But this more or less this is the personality of the guy and he seemed to be sure about what he was doing.

Ties made-to-order

According Gianni the thing that differs Passaggio Cravatte from other tie-makers is that the company do not have any ready-to-wear products at all. All of their ties are “bespoke” and always made-to-order. The company uses genuine vintage silks, that are in general  very limited and not easy to acquire. Usually the patches of silks are small and sometimes there can be only 3-4 ties made from some of fabrics. So as Gianni says, Passaggio Cravatte is offering something pretty much unique to it’s clients. In case you happen to have a chance to travel Milan, Gianni always try to meet their clients in person, even by inviting them to their own house. For those who are not able to go and meet them in Milan, they offer the option of making orders via email or even by phone (which is a great way to discuss the details). But as said, they do not have retailers or even a shop of their own. Instead they prefer more limited production that enables the company to make every single piece of ties personal and individualized for each customer.

All of the ties are handmade in Italy according to old traditions and as said by Gianni, “you won't find a single machine made stitch in any Passaggio Cravatte product” as no machines are used.

I have no personal experience of their ties yet, but ill definitely at some point give them a try. I was especially attracted by the vintage silk fabrics I was able to take a closer look during our meet-up. With that kind of a tie you wouldn’t need to “be afraid” that someone would walk by wearing a similar one.
